Things I learned today

Journaling new insights. Some of them may turn out to be wrong. So what? Making mistakes is part of the journey.

Power over Ethernet works just like that

Matthias Benkard Donnerstag November 7, 2024

I never used Power over Ethernet before, so I was unsure of this and decided to just try it out. A run-of-the-mill Cat5e cable does the job.

You may want higher-graded cables for better shielding and thicker wires for heat protection at higher wattages. So just to be safe I ordered some Cat8 cables. It should, however, not be necessary at the low power levels that I need.

Ruckus and Aruba

Matthias Benkard Samstag November 2, 2024

I recently learned that Ruckus access points are in a league wholly separate from prosumer equipment (such as UniFi and Omada) when it comes to antenna design. The Ruckus Unleashed firmware works without a separate controller.

Today the Internet tells me that a comparable line of controllerless enterprise equipment is Aruba Instant (not to be confused with Aruba Instant On, which just to make things maximally confusing is the prosumer line). The antenna design reportedly trails Ruckus, but only by a bit.
